If you’re a Penn SigEp alumnus, you’ve probably heard of The Reflect Organization’s great work by now. We’ve talked about it in our monthly eLetter and in past editions of The Delta Penn. But in case you need a refresher...

What is Reflect?

The Reflect Organization is a national mental wellness nonprofit with college and university chapters, dedicated to empowering students to foster a culture of authenticity, self-love, and allyship on campus.

PA Delta Alumni Board Member Brother Jared Fenton ’17 founded Reflect at Penn back in 2015 and produced the first-ever mixed-methods research examining "Penn Face," a phenomenon describing the "masks of effortless perfection" college students wear to hide true feelings such as loneliness, unhappiness, and isolation, proving incredibly debilitating and harmful to their mental wellness.

What is the $3 Challenge?

Recently, Reflect teamed up with another organization called The 3 Dollar Challenge (3DC), a grassroots fundraising initiative dedicated to engaging extended networks of like-minded people and leveraging the power of online communities to enact social change. In summer 2020, the inaugural 3 Dollar Challenge campaign organically raised over $20,000 for COVID-19 relief causes in just a few short weeks, entirely through small donations garnered from social media network connections.

Now, 3DC is raising funds to support Reflect and Jared’s programming.

Why should I care?

Since the start of the pandemic, 25% of people aged 18-24 have reported having serious thoughts of suicide (CDC), the second-leading cause of death among college students (NIMH), and over 60% of college students have reported feeling very lonely in the past year alone (ACHA).

We know that research shows just one caring person can change, or even save, a life.

What will my donation help support?

100% of the proceeds of the 3 Dollar Challenge will go towards Reflect’s programming to benefit college students and young adults’ mental wellness across the country, including suicide prevention training, mental wellness workshops, and resilience-building events.

Every dollar donated will be 1:1 matched (up to $75,000), allowing them to double the impact on college students’ mental wellness and suicide prevention.

Reflect has been working on some big projects, and your contributions are critical to their expansion. In the years since its inception, Reflect has collaborated with Lady Gaga’s Born This Way Foundation and the American Association of Suicidology’s Public Health Committee (helping to lead its working group for Equity in Suicide Prevention Resources). Reflect also created a free Resource and Activity Guide to help students cope during the COVID-19 crisis, which the NCAA Division I Student-Athlete Advisory Committee ordered for distribution to over 170,000 Division I athletes in the country.

How to participate in the 3 Dollar Challenge:

1 - DONATE. The $3 Dollar Challenge is built on the idea that a little amount from a lot of people makes a big difference. Penn SigEp has our own team donation page, and we’re currently at the top of the leaderboard! Help us stay on top by donating just $3 at https://givebutter.com/3DC/sigep-penn.

2 - POST. On Instagram, post a picture or story with some of those in your life that you care about.

3 - TAG. Tag and nominate three people to participate next to keep the challenge going, and tag @thereflectorg and @3dollarchallenge! Otherwise, feel free to spread the word through email, phone, etc.

It is this Brotherhood that originally inspired the work of Reflect and continues to drive our mission forward today. If you have any questions at all, or if I and/or Reflect can be helpful to any of you, please do not hesitate to reach out.”
