Charles B. Crawford, Jr, 1985, Continues Penn Delta Banking Traditions

Following in the footsteps of early Penn Delta alumni Tom Rankin, 1914; and Harry Huff, 1925; and later alumni including Bill Gelbach, 1943;  Ed Lesser, 1955;  David Woodyatt, 1965;  Garry Russell, 1966;  and John Cherry, 1987, Charlie Crawford, after starting, managing and selling the Private Bank of Buckhead in Atlanta, GA, is now Chairman and CEO of Hyperion Bank at 2nd Street and Girard Avenue in the Northern Liberties/Fishtown community of Philadelphia.

Charlie received his early education in Darien, CT, and enrolled at Penn in 1981.  He joined Penn Delta and was (what we formerly called) pledge class president.

Charlie enjoyed his SigEp experience and developed and continues to maintain a number of "terrific relationships," he adds.  Charlie lived at the chapter house as a senior and roomed with Joe Halprin, 1987, and they have been fast friends ever since.

Charlie, taking part in the opportunity which is the University, enrolled in a dual-degree program at Penn, thus earning a BA in Economics from the School of Arts and Sciences and a Wharton BS in Management.  (No pun intended.)

A champion of community banking for more than 30 years, Charlie is leading Hyperion Bank to excel in superior personal service, strong client and community relationships, as well as in commercial and residential lending.

Hyperion Bank is housed in a beautiful building which was built in 1871 by the Eighth National Bank.  "It looks like a bank," Charlie observed.  Restored to its original "glory" by Hyperion's owners in 2006, the red brick building with attractive bays, limestone arches and an empire roof, stands as a welcoming and historical edifice in the neighborhood.

Community involvement and support of Hyperion Bank resulted in many new restaurants, making the local area one of Philadelphia's favorite dining destinations and earning Northern Liberties a Number 14 slot on Forbes.com's list of "20 Hippest Hipster Neighborhoods" in America in 2012.

And last May, Forbes revisited Fishtown and featured Hyperion Bank clients in a story that proclaimed "How Fishtown, Philadelphia, Became America's Hottest New Neighborhood."

Penn Delta is proud of Charlie Crawford and his team at Hyperion Bank.  Our more insightful and enterprising undergraduates would do well to call on Charlie and seek his guidance, especially if neighborhood banking holds an interest.
