Hi, brothers! I hope you are doing well.

First, I wanted to send a brief annual update for the Jack Shores Memorial Sigma Phi Epsilon Scholarship.  As we wrote you last year, the Scholarship has already been given its first student, who is from Jack’s neighborhood in North Philadelphia!  He's currently a sophomore enrolled in the prestigious Vagelos Program for Molecular Life Sciences, working towards a B.A. in biochemistry and an M.S. in chemistry. He has plans to get either a Ph.D. in biochemistry or an M.D./Ph.D. and become a researcher or doctor.  In addition, he's on the Dean's List. In his first letter to us, his scholarship sponsors, last year he wrote, "With all of your support, both monetary and emotional, I feel ready to take these next three years at Penn and I know that I will stop at nothing to succeed.  I only hope to honor Jack Shores' memory and do all of you proud."  In this year's letter, he wrote "Thank you for taking a chance on me and helping me through college. As a kid from Philadelphia, I know that doesn't happen too often. I'll continue to make the most out of the help that you have given me and make you proud."

Here are a couple pages that I received from Penn regarding the Scholarship and our recipient. The first is the Financial Summary of our Scholarship, which currently has a market value of $62,932.92 (double last year's amount.) As a reminder, the scholarship is committed to reach at least $150,000 by 2018.  Note that any donations you make will serve to further grow the Jack Scholarship beyond this minimum $150,000 level, and thus will be able to fund our recipient and future recipient with a greater percentage of their education.

Second, as we mentioned last year, you can make contributions to the Jack Shores Scholarship anytime. Some of you have already beaten me to the punch and asked me for the link to make this year's contribution.  We will send out one email reminder towards the end of each year to all brothers who have expressed interest in contributing. Please forward this link around to any other brothers who you think may be interested in contributing.

Most conveniently, you can now make a contribution directly to the Jack Scholarship through the Penn website!

If you want to contribute, here's all you need to do:

  1. Go to this link
  1. Go down to the 4th text box down, and type in Jack Shores (Memorial Sigma Phi Epsilon Scholarship) in the search box. You should see the Jack Scholarship populate. Then, make sure to click on "select."
  1. Select make a “One-time gift”.
  1. Select/enter the amount you wish to donate.
  1. Then, enter your info and payment info.
